Brent Michael Davids from Stockbridge-Munsee Community

Event Category:

Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives proudly present celebrated composer, and Forge Project Fellow, Brent Michael Davids on Thursday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Davids is a citizen of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community and is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan. His works have premiered at Tanglewood Music Center’s Koussevitzky Shed and Ozawa Hall.

This Thursday, the final day of his Forge residency, Davids will be in conversation about his most recent project  “Requiem for America: Singing for the Invisible People,” a project he continued composing while at Forge. This major work tackles the genocidal founding of America, giving voice to America’s Indigenous People. In addition to the Western singers and orchestra, each “Requiem” performance will feature Indigenous singers recruited from local tribal communities. Once completed, it is hoped that “Requiem” will tour every state in the country. Many of Davids’ works employ traditional Native American instruments and unique instruments of his own design, including quartz flutes, which he will play at the event.

A composer of symphonies, and works for chorus, dance, theater, and film scores, Brent Michael Davids is an experimenter at heart, walking in non-Mohican society as a professional composer of music yet carrying the heart of Indigenous song as he goes. A scholar and multi-award winner, Davids advocates for music literacy, and strongly believes music should have a community purpose. His music has premiered in Austria, Bermuda, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Disney Concert Hall, Rothko Chapel, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center, Lincoln Center Out-Of-Doors, The Kennedy Center, and Tanglewood.
