Although they are few and far between, we have some beautiful photographs of houses in Stockbridge throughout the years. This week’s spotlight highlights the home of one William Hinton and his wife, Harriet.
The Hinton’s lived in a house on the east side of Pine Street, just past Shamrock Street. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hinton were born in England and emigrated to the United States in the mid-1850’s. They married in Stockbridge in 1856 and together they had 5 children, 3 of whom lived to adulthood. Mr. Hinton was a carpenter by trade.
This photograph, taken in the late 1880’s or early 1890’s, shows William and Harriet Hinton with their youngest daughter, Sarah. Soon after this photograph was taken, Sarah would marry Adam Schilling of the store Schilling & Noble. Adam and Sarah Schilling had a daughter, Miss Alice Schilling, who attended Syracuse and Middlebury, studied languages, and had a career as a teacher. – September 28, 2025
