Music, Masks and Dance of Bali, Indonesia

The Stockbridge Library will host a live demonstration and discussion of masks, dance and music of Bali, Indonesia. In addition to¬†Gamelan music played on gongs, cymbals, chimes and drums, the performers present songs and vocal styles of the dance and theater traditions of Bali. They also present their own original masks and discuss how to make masks and create one’s own characters and movements. Both children and adults are welcome and the event is free and open to the public.

Beth Skinner and Edward Herbst¬†who will conduct the program, are co-artistic directors of Triple Shadow, a performance company which has toured to festivals and theaters and collaporated with artists in Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, Egypt, Indonesia, Hungary, Romania and Canada. Herbst and Skinner have spent more than four years in Bali, researching and performing traditional and contemporary arts, sponsored by a Fulbright grant, Wesleyan University, Asian Cultural Council and The Ford Foundation. The company’s website is www.tripleshadow.org.

This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Stockbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
