Sunday Speaker Series: Jake Levin

Jake Levin

Join us on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. for a presentation by Jake Levin, head butcher at Great Barrington’s Meat Market and this month’s featured artist.  Please note that this lecture will now take place at the Stockbridge Town Offices located at 50 Main Street.  Levin’s talk will focus on his efforts towards creating a holistic and sustainable practice, one that erases the lines between being a butcher, being an artist, and being an active member of the community.  A reception will follow at the library.

About the artist: Jake Levin grew up in New Marlborough, MA. After graduating, from Wesleyan University, in 2006 he moved to NYC. While in NYC Jake became intensely involved with cooking and with the growing local-food movement. Living in Williamsburg he became a part of a community of people committed to local and sustainably produced food. After four years of working jobs in the NYC art world and feeling a strong draw to the food world he decided he was ready for a change.

In 2010 Jake began an apprenticeship at Fleisher’s Meat in Kingston NY, where he learned the craft of whole animal butchery. For two years Jake worked as a butcher/consultant advising small farms, and start-up food companies.

In the spring of 2012 Jake moved back to New Marlborough, with his partner, Silka Glanzman. He is now the butcher at the Meat Market – a local, pasture raised butcher shop and cafe in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
