Susan Pettee lives in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. She studied art at Boston Museum School and the Corcoran in Washington, D.C. and was a printmaker in the 1970s.  After another career as an antitrust lawyer, she encountered botanical art at the Corcoran in Washington in 2000 and has not stopped since.  She studied with Anne-Marie Evans at the English Gardening School in London and received a Certificate in Botanical Painting from the Society of Botanical Artists in England in 2007.  She has participated in several of the American Society of Botanical Artists’ international juried exhibitions in New York as well as in New England Society of Botanical Artists’ juried exhibitions, and has exhibited in other local and international venues.

She has been collaborating for several years with author Mary Taylor Simeti on a book, Garlands of the Gods, about the wildflowers that ornament Sicily’s archaeological sites.  Garlands will be published in December 2018, by the University of Palermo Press.  In May-July 2017, the Arnold Arboretum in Boston hosted an exhibition of some of the illustrations from the book together with informative captions by Ms Simeti.  In connection with the publication of the book, the Orto Botanico of the University of Palermo will offer a similar exhibition in December 2018 of a selection of Ms. Pettee’s illustrations with Ms Simeti’s captions.
