Virtual Speaker Series: Ted Widmer, Author of Lincoln on the Verge: Thirteen Days to Washington

Join us as we welcome Ted Widmer, author of Lincoln on the Verge: Thirteen Days to Washington on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 1:00 p.m., to our virtual speaker series.

Edward (Ted) Widmer, a speechwriter in the Clinton White House and a Senior Advisor to Bill Clinton, is a historian specializing in the history of American Civilization.  Founder of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, he was the Director and Librarian of Brown University’s John Carter Brown Library and of the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.  A former Special Advisor to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, he created “Disunion,” the New York Times’s digital history of the Civil War.

Ted is the author of seven books, including a biography of Martin Van Buren, a history of presidential races, and, most recently, Lincoln On the Verge: Thirteen Days to Washington, an account of Abraham’s Lincoln’s 1861 train voyage to the White House and the Presidency.  He and Library Trustee André Bernard will have a conversation about the voyage, Lincoln as fledgling president, and the effects of the presidency on the men who held office.
