Cook’s Store

The village store can be an integral part of village life. In Glendale, S.A. Cook’s store was where villagers could come and purchase needs, wares, or gather for a meeting or to see an entertainment.

This week’s spotlight is a simple yet significant piece of retail history – a 1917 receipt from the Cook’s Store.

Sanford A. Cook took over ownership of the store in 1888 and operated the store as well as acted as postmaster until 1923 when he retired. Born in North Adams, Cook moved to Glendale in 1888 when he took over the business. During his time in Stockbridge, Cook became a town Selectman, an Overseer of the Poor, and was involvedĀ in organizing the Glendale Fire Company in 1905. — Friday, November 21, 2025
