“Caught in the Act…of Cooking”
Environmental Portraits of Members of the Stockbridge Library Cookbook Club in their home kitchens.
by Albert P’an
The Cookbook Club meets at the Library on the first Thursday of every month.
Members select a recipe from the featured Book of the Month, prepare the dish at
home, and bring it in to share with the group. Together we enjoy the shared meal
while discussing the book and the various recipes used.
Last summer, I offered members the opportunity to take their portraits while they are
at work preparing a dish in their kitchens. These images would be exhibited in a
future monthly show in the Library. The photographs, known as environmental
portraits, were captured during informal conversations with the subjects. None of
these images were posed before they were taken.
By photographing subjects in a comfortable and familiar environment, the images
reveal more than physical likeness; they convey the essence of the subjects’
character and personality. This approach allows the portraits to tell a deeper story,
showcasing the individuality of each member beyond what a studio portrait could
achieve.
