Clark is an extraordinary gardener and writer and recently published two books that have garnered significant attention in Europe:
· Hollington’s Florilegium – a stunning picture book of flowers
“Images and words that will warm the heart of every artistic gardener: this book is a wonder for the eyes and spirit.”
— Stefano Mancuso
· Small Plots – a gardener’s memoir
“Though seemingly light on the surface, these episodes are grounded in a larger, unique story, artfully narrated with a rare and delightful touch of self-mockery.”
— Paolo Pejrone
Clark Lawrence is a College of the Atlantic graduate who moved from Maine to Italy in 1995, where he founded the non-profit cultural association, Reading Retreats in Rural Italy. La Macchina Fissa, a former pump-house located just south of Mantova, is now his home. It is a rustic, 10-bedroom B&B for bibliophiles, known internationally for its library, art exhibitions, classical music concerts and botanical garden. When not taking care of his guests, goats and garden, Clark writes for the journal Hortus, edited by David Wheeler, Gardens Illustrated, and the Italian magazine Giardino Antico.
