July Artist of the Month – Mary Berle

Artist Statement from Mary Berle:

These are photographs of sheep and their guardian dogs who populate Lila’s Mountain Farm in the Southern Berkshires.

I am the shepherd and the current steward, and I carry my camera while I work. I’m learning that the animals are in a deep relationship with one another. I try to capture moments as they unfold that show the depths of care, protection, friendship, and empathy among them. My hope is viewers will feel invited into seeing their world and will be moved to care about maintaining a Berkshire landscape that includes farms and flocks.

Lila’s Mountain Farm is one of the last large farms in the southern Berkshires. Products include wool sweaters and yarn, flowering branches, and peonies. All proceeds from pictures sold will go to The Stockbridge Library and to sustaining the farm, flock, and guardians.
