Our second season, “Online Poetry: The Refuge of Witnessing” will provide a weekly poetry sanctuary to hear moving words, deepen our exploration of their meaning, and connect with each other. Join us each Thursday from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. It will be your port in a worldly storm.

This week’s featured poet is James Davis.

James Phillip Davis was born on a U.S. Army base in Nuremburg, Germany, in 1985. He grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. He has a BA in French and English from the University of Houston and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Florida.  He currently lives in Denton, Texas, where he is a Voertman-Ardoin Fellow and PhD candidate in English-Creative Writing at the University of North Texas. He reads poetry submissions for Narrative Magazine.

James’s poems cover a wide range of subject matter: gay male identity and eros, Evangelical Christianity, Scrabble, video games, toxic masculinity, depression, and capitalism. His first book, Club Q, was awarded the Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize by The Waywiser Press and will be published Fall 2020. (Order now!) His poems have appeared in two installments of the Best New Poets anthology (2011 & 2019), as well as numerous print and online journals.

In addition to poetry, James occasionally writes short fiction and creative non-fiction. His essay “Skimmer” won an Honorable Mention from the AWP Intro Journal Awards, and his stories have appeared in NANO Fiction and American Short Fiction online.

When he’s not writing, James plays a serious game of Scrabble. He has been ranked among the top 50 players in North America.
